There are these moments when memories from our childhood are brought back. Normally it happens, when something – a smell, a taste from our childhood, which we do not often encounter any longer, or a toy or another object, which are not any longer common.
This time it was a “Strickliesel” – a more or less cylindric wooden tool in the form of a girl, a little bit more than 10 cms long, with a hole in the middle and metal “teeth” on its top. The yarn is laid around the teeth and then slipped over each tooth – round by round. This way a knitted lace is created. After many rounds of knitting it will finally appear at the end of the hole in the middle and grow further out it which each new row. I still remember, that one has to pull from time to time the string running through the hole and the excitement, when finally the lace was seen. Until then it was lots of work without seeing any result. I wonder, whether I still could do knit with the Strickliesel – it’s more than 40 year ago. I guess it would come back quickly.
However, what I cannot remember, for what we used these laces. I can still remember that they were often in many colors, but what was their use? Any suggestion?
