This small path in an apple orchard transformed itself into a red carpet made of colored leaves and dropped apples. You can still see some of the apples on the trees – waiting to be picked, until gravity gets its hold on them. As powerful as pictures are – worth a thousands words – here the smell is missing. It is one of the smells of my childhood: the slightly sour, refreshing smell of rotting apples. We lived close to a deserted orchard. We kids were used go there to pick some of the apples, while others had fallen down and were in different stages of decay.
While the red carpet looks inviting to stroll on it, it was actually not that easy as there were quite many apples.
The combination of red and green apples, together with the yellow leaves – make quite a nice still life on the grey background of the path.
And a closer look actually reveals that the apples are quite tempting – red and shiny, like polished by nature.
Well, I decided for the title of fall’s carpet, though also “the beautiful and the ugly” came to my mind. Fall has the metaphoric meaning of harvesting, but also end of life, as the featured image shows us.
